What is Eid?

Eid is one of the most significant celebrations for Muslims all over the world, marking moments of spiritual reflection, gratitude, and community. As part of their Islamic faith, Muslims everywhere observe two major Eid festivals each year.

1. Eid al-Fitr : Celebrated after Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. This festival is a joyous occasion that brings Muslims together to celebrate the rewards of their devotion and patience throughout Ramadan. Communities often come together for prayer, food and celebration.

2. Eid al-Adha : This Eid honors the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and highlights the values of selflessness and generosity. Muslims offer a sacred sacrifice of an animal, and the meat is distributed among needy and vulnerable communities to share the blessings of Eid. Eid al-Adha takes place following the holy pilgrimage of Hajj.

Eid is a time for prayer, charity, and connecting with loved ones. It is also an opportunity to share blessings with those less fortunate, ensuring no one is left behind in the festivities.

When is Eid 2025?

The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, so the dates of Eid vary each year. In 2025, Eid dates are as follows, though they may vary slightly based on moon sightings in different regions:

Eid al-Fitr 2025: Expected to begin on the evening of Sunday, March 30, and continue through Monday, March 31. This celebration follows the end of Ramadan, a month dedicated to fasting, prayer, and reflection.

Eid al-Adha 2025: Expected to commence on the evening of Friday, June 6, and last until Saturday, June 7. This festival commemorates the sacred tradition of Qurbani in the holy month of Dhul Hijjah.

The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, meaning each month begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. This means that exact dates can differ by location. Regional variations in moon sightings often lead to slightly different observances of Eid worldwide.

To ensure accurate timings, it is recommended to consult your local mosque or Islamic organization closer to the time. Their guidance can help you plan prayers, community gatherings, and celebrations.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marks the end of Ramadan - a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. This joyous occasion begins with a special prayer known as Salah al-Eid, held in mosques or open areas where Muslims gather in unity to offer gratitude to Allah.

One of the key traditions of Eid al-Fitr is the giving of Zakat al-Fitr, or Fitrana, a small, fixed charitable donation made before the Eid prayer. This ensures that less fortunate members of the community can partake in the celebrations. It is an act of compassion and solidarity, reflecting the values cultivated during Ramadan.

Other traditions include preparing festive meals, exchanging gifts, and visiting loved ones. Families often wear new clothes and decorate their homes, creating an atmosphere of joy and gratitude. The day is filled with shared meals, laughter, and expressions of goodwill.

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. This profound story is a reminder of unwavering faith and submission to the divine will.

The celebration of Eid al-Adha includes the ritual of Qurbani (sacrifice), where livestock such as sheep, goats, or cows are slaughtered in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion. The meat from the sacrifice is distributed in three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for relatives and friends, and one-third for those in need. This act emphasizes the importance of charity and sharing. Many people now choose to offer their Qurbani through a trustworthy charity like Al Mustafa Welfare Trust, where the entire Qurbani is distributed to those in need, supporting even more people.

Muslims begin the day with a special Eid salah, followed by gatherings with family and friends. The day is also marked by acts of kindness, generosity, and reflection on the blessings of life.

Donate your Qurbani and we ensure vulnerable families receive essential support during Eid. Help us distribute Qurbani meat to those who need it most.

How Are Eid Dates Determined?

Eid dates follow the lunar Islamic calendar, which is about 10-12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. This means that each day the calendar shifts 10-12 days earlier. The start of each Islamic month is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. This process involves local committees or individuals observing the moon and announcing the beginning of a new month.

As a result, the exact dates of Eid vary each year and can differ between countries and even communities. Cultural practices and regional weather conditions also play a role in determining the visibility of the crescent moon.
