Water Well Case Study – Hassan Ali Story

My name is Hasan Ali. I am 17 years old, but my life changed when I was just ten. That was the year I lost both my parents. My mother went first. Then my father. I don't talk about that time much. It was very hard.

After they were gone, I looked around and there was no one. My grandparents were there but they were old and sick themselves. My brothers and sisters were small. The youngest ones did not fully understand what had happened. I was ten years old but I had to figure out what to do.

Water Scarcity in the Area

The first big problem was water. There was no tap near our house. Every morning I would wake up early and walk two kilometers to get water. I carried heavy bottles back home. Sometimes I went two times in one day. My hands and back hurt a lot. I was always tired.

Because of this I started missing school. First a few days, then more days. I kept telling myself I would go back. But then weeks passed. I had to find work. I started selling things on the street, small things, whatever I could sell to bring a little money home. Some days were okay. Other days I came home with almost nothing and I did not know what we would eat.

I missed school very much. My father used to tell us that education is the most important thing. He wanted all of us to study. When I had to stop, I felt like I was letting him down even though he was already gone. That feeling stayed with me for a long time.

We managed somehow. I cannot explain how exactly. Day by day. Some neighbors helped sometimes. We ate simple food. My siblings were young so they did not understand how difficult things were. I tried not to show them.

Then one day a water tap was installed close to our area. It was shared by a few homes but it was near. I did not have to walk far anymore. I remember the first morning I used it. I just stood there for a moment. I could not believe it was real.

"When Al Mustafa Welfare Trust installed the water tap in our area, my whole life changed. I used to walk two kilometers every day just to bring water home. Now that time belongs to my brothers and sisters, they use it to go to school. That one tap gave my family something I could not give them myself."

After the tap came, mornings became different. I had more time. My brothers and sisters could get ready for school without rushing. I could do my work earlier. It sounds like a small thing but for us it was not small at all. It changed our whole day.

Now my brothers and sisters go to school. I still work. I still take care of the house. But when I see them leave in the morning with their bags, I feel something good inside. My father wanted this for us. I could not finish my own studies, but I am trying to make sure they do.

I don't know what will happen to me. Maybe one day I will find a way to learn again. Maybe not. But I want my brothers and sisters to have a better life than this. That is what I work for every day. That is what keeps me going.
