What is Shab e Barat?
Shab e Barat, also known as Laylat al-Bara'ah, Mid-Shaban, or the Night of Forgiveness, is one of the most important nights for Muslims. In other words, it is a time to prepare yourself for the upcoming Ramadan. The name comes from Persian and Urdu, where "Shab" means "night" and "Barat" means "freedom" or "salvation." This blessed night takes place on the 15th of Shaban, the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Muslims all over the globe especially in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East, celebrate this night with great dedication. Many people think that on this holy night, Allah Almighty descends to the lowest heaven and gives His limitless mercy to those who truly seek forgiveness. The gates of divine mercy are wide open, and believers are encouraged to pray, think about their actions, and accomplish good deeds. Muslims often light lamps or electric lights in their houses and mosques to celebrate Shab-e-Barat.
Why Shab e barat is Important Spiritually?
The importance of Shab-e-Barat lies in the concept that Allah Almighty decides everyone's fate for the upcoming year on this night. It is stated that life, death, food, and shelter are all predetermined, therefore this is a good time for believers to turn to their Creator with humility and hope.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
"When it is the night of the middle of Sha'ban, spend its night in prayer and observe a fast on that day. For Allah descends at sunset on that night to the lowest heaven and says: 'Is there no one who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there no one who will ask Me for provision so that I may provide for him? Is there no one who is afflicted by trouble, that I may relieve him?'" (Sunan Ibn Majah 1388)
