Qurbani Dua – The Complete Guide

The Qurbani dua is one of the most profound supplications a Muslim recites during the sacred act of sacrifice on Eid al-Adha. Far more than a ritual utterance, the dua recited during Qurbani is a heartfelt declaration of total submission to Allah (SWT), an affirmation that our prayer, our sacrifice, our life, and our death belong to Him alone.

The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) taught us these supplications as part of the Sunnah. Therefore, reciting the correct Qurbani dua not only validates the sacrifice spiritually but also ensures that every intention of the heart aligns with the purpose for which Allah (SWT) ordained this sacred act.

Why the Qurbani Dua Matters

Allah (SWT) tells us clearly in Surah Al-Hajj (22:37):

“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him.”

This ayah is the foundation of everything we do during Qurbani. The physical act of slaughter is not the objective, the sincere heart, the pure intention, and the dua recited in total submission to Allah are what carry the sacrifice to the heavens.

Without the correct intention and dua, the sacrifice becomes a purely physical act devoid of spiritual significance. Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) demonstrated specific duas at each stage of the Qurbani, before the slaughter, at the moment of sacrifice, and after completion, giving us a complete Sunnah to follow. Each dua recited is an act of worship in itself, bringing the believer closer to Allah (SWT) and increasing the reward of the sacrifice immeasurably.

The Eid al-Adha Takbeer (Allahu Akbar)

The Takbeer is the declaration of Allah's greatness recited throughout the days of Eid al-Adha, from after Fajr on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah until after Asr on the 13th. It fills the days of Eid with the praise of Allah (SWT) and is recited aloud whilst walking to the Eid prayer, on the way home, and throughout the blessed days.

EID AL-ADHA TAKBEER
Transliteration:

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa Lillahil Hamd

Translation:

Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest. And all praise belongs to Allah alone.

Meaning & Significance:

This takbeer is the soul of Eid al-Adha. It is recited continuously throughout the days of sacrifice, expressing that Allah alone is supremely great, worthy of all worship, and deserving of all praise. Reciting it loudly is a Sunnah.

Source: Reciting the Takbeer during the days of Eid al-Adha is established from the Companions (RA) and the practice of the Sunnah.

Niyyat - The Intention Before Qurbani

Before performing Qurbani, the intention (Niyyat) must be made sincerely in the heart. The intention does not need to be spoken aloud, it is the state of the heart that matters. The intention must be solely for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) alone.

NIYYAT - INTENTION FOR QURBANI
Transliteration:

Nawaitu an udahhiya lillahi ta'ala

Translation:

I intend to perform the sacrifice for the sake of Allah, the Most High.

Meaning & Significance:

This niyyat affirms that the sacrifice is performed purely for Allah (SWT), not for any worldly show, tradition, or praise. The sincerity of this intention is the very essence of the Qurbani and the precondition for all duas that follow.

Source: Based on the principle that all acts of worship require intention (Niyyah), as established in the Hadith: 'Actions are judged by intentions.' (Bukhari, Muslim)

Important: If the Qurbani is being performed on behalf of another person (such as a deceased family member), make the intention for them. For example: 'I intend to perform this sacrifice on behalf of [name] for the sake of Allah.'

Dua Before Slaughtering the Animal

Before the slaughter, the person performing Qurbani should face the animal towards the Qiblah (direction of Makkah) and recite the following dua. This supplication is derived from Surah Al-An'am (6:79, 162-163) and was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself.

DUA BEFORE QURBANI - FROM SURAH AL-AN'AM

Transliteration:

Translation:

I have turned my face sincerely towards the One Who created the heavens and the earth, following the pure way of Ibrahim (AS), and I am not among the polytheists. Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are all for Allah, Lord of all the worlds. He has no partner. This is what I have been commanded, and I am among the first to submit.

Meaning & Significance:

This beautiful supplication from the Quran is the declaration of a believer's complete surrender to Allah (SWT). By reciting it before the sacrifice, the Muslim affirms that every aspect of their existence, from worship to sacrifice, from living to dying, belongs solely to their Creator. It is the ultimate expression of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah).

Source: Surah Al-An'am (6:79, 162-163), Practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) before Qurbani.

Then Continue with:

After the above dua, before the actual slaughter, say:

CONTINUING DUA (SEEKING ACCEPTANCE)
Transliteration:

Translation:

O Allah, accept this sacrifice from me just as You accepted from Your close friend Ibrahim (AS) and Your beloved Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

Meaning & Significance:

This supplication invokes two of the greatest examples of sacrifice in Islamic history, Prophet Ibrahim (AS), the close friend (Khalil) of Allah, who was willing to sacrifice his son, and Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the beloved (Habib) of Allah. By making this dua, the Muslim seeks the same divine acceptance that these greatest of Prophets received.

Source: This dua is from the Islamic tradition and widely practiced across all schools of thought.

Dua at the Moment of Slaughter

At the precise moment of slaughter, this is the essential dua that must be recited. The person performing the sacrifice should hold the animal facing the Qiblah, ensure the knife is sharp (to minimise pain), and recite:

ESSENTIAL DUA AT MOMENT OF SLAUGHTER
Transliteration:

Bismillahi wallahu Akbar

Translation:

In the name of Allah - Allah is the Greatest.

Meaning & Significance:

This is the minimum required dua at the moment of slaughter. Omitting it deliberately makes the Qurbani invalid. The complete extended version below is preferred and follows the Sunnah more fully. The declaration 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) at this critical moment affirms that this act is performed in complete submission to Allah, not for any worldly purpose.

Source: This dua is obligatory. Omitting it intentionally renders the Qurbani invalid. (Agreed upon by all major schools of Islamic jurisprudence)

Complete Extended Version (Preferred):

COMPLETE DUA AT SLAUGHTER (FROM HADITH)
Transliteration:

Bismillahi wallahu Akbar, Allahumma minka wa laka, Allahumma taqabbal minni.

Translation:

In the name of Allah - Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is from You and for You. O Allah, accept this from me.

Meaning & Significance:

This complete dua beautifully encapsulates the entire spirit of Qurbani in a single breath: the invocation of Allah's name, His absolute greatness, the acknowledgement that the sacrifice is a gift from Him being returned to Him, and the humble request for acceptance. The phrase 'minka wa laka' (from You and for You) represents total submission, the believer recognises that everything they have comes from Allah and all returns to Him.

Source: Reported by Al-Hakim and others. This is the most comprehensive form of the slaughter dua as practiced in the Sunnah.

Important Etiquette at Moment of Slaughter:

The animal must face the Qiblah (direction of the Ka'bah)
The knife must be sharp to ensure the slaughter is swift and merciful
Do not sharpen the knife in front of the animal
The animal must not see other animals being slaughtered
Bismillah must be recited at the exact moment of slaughter, not before or after

Dua After Completing the Qurbani

After the sacrifice is complete, this is the ideal moment for heartfelt dua. The blood has been shed in the name of Allah, the obligation has been fulfilled, now the believer turns to their Lord in gratitude and hope. The Prophet (SAW) taught us to make dua immediately after significant acts of worship, as the heart is most receptive and sincere at these moments.

DUA AFTER QURBANI (FOR ACCEPTANCE)
Transliteration:

Allahumma taqabbal minni waj'al haadha 'anni wa 'an dhurriyati wa 'an jami'il-muslimeen.

Translation:

O Allah, accept this sacrifice from me and make its reward for me, for my children and descendants, and for all the Muslims.

Meaning & Significance:

This dua extends the blessing of the sacrifice beyond the individual to their family and to the entire Ummah of the Prophet (SAW). It reflects the spirit of Islamic brotherhood and the understanding that our acts of worship carry collective blessings. After reciting this, you may also make any personal dua, asking for forgiveness, health, guidance, and whatever is in your heart.

Source: Widely narrated in Islamic tradition and practiced by scholars across all madhabs.

Additional Dua of Thanks After Qurbani:

DUA OF GRATITUDE  (AFTER QURBANI)
Transliteration:

Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka antas-samee'ul 'aleem.

Translation:

Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Meaning & Significance:

This is the dua of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) after they completed building the Ka'bah. It is deeply moving to recite it after Qurbani, as we are following in the footsteps of the same Prophet Ibrahim (AS) whose sacrifice Qurbani itself commemorates. It is a dua of humility, acknowledging that we cannot truly measure the worth of our worship, but Allah (SWT) hears and knows every sincere heart.

Dua When Purchasing the Qurbani Animal

Many Muslims are unaware that there is a recommended dua from the Sunnah to recite when buying or receiving the Qurbani animal. This dua is narrated in Hadith (Abu Dawud) and asks for Allah's blessings on the animal before the sacrifice.

DUA WHEN BUYING THE QURBANI ANIMAL
Transliteration:

Allahumma inni as-aluka khayrihi wa khayra ma jubila 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubila 'alayh.

Translation:

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it is inclined towards, and I seek Your refuge from its evil and the evil of what it is inclined towards.

Meaning & Significance:

This dua should be recited while placing your hand on the animal's forehead after purchasing it. It is a beautiful act of connecting the entire Qurbani journey, from acquisition to sacrifice, with the remembrance of Allah (SWT). It also reflects the Islamic principle of treating animals with care and seeking blessings for them.

Source: Narrated in Hadith (Abu Dawud), recommended when acquiring any animal, especially for Qurbani.

Dua for the Ummah During Eid al-Adha

The spirit of Eid al-Adha is not only personal worship, it is a collective celebration of the entire Muslim Ummah. The Prophet (SAW) taught us to remember our brothers and sisters in dua, particularly those suffering across the world. These duas for the Ummah are especially powerful during the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah.

DUA FOR THE UMMAH
Transliteration:

Allahumma aslih Ummata Muhammad. Allahumma farrij 'an Ummati Muhammad. Allahumma irham Ummata Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

Translation:

O Allah, improve the state of the Ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, grant ease to the Ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, have mercy on the Ummah of Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

Meaning & Significance:

Reciting this dua during the days of Eid al-Adha carries immense weight. As we celebrate and sacrifice, millions of our brothers and sisters face hunger, conflict, and displacement. This dua connects our personal act of worship to the collective wellbeing of the global Muslim community, reflecting the true spirit of Islamic brotherhood and the generosity of Qurbani.

Source: Widely narrated in the Islamic tradition as a recommended dua for the Muslim Ummah.

Qurbani Dua (FAQ's)

The essential Qurbani dua at the moment of slaughter is: 'Bismillahi wallahu Akbar, Allahumma minka wa laka, Allahumma taqabbal minni', meaning 'In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is from You and for You. O Allah, accept this from me.' Before slaughter, the longer dua from Surah Al-An'am (Inni wajjahtu...) is strongly recommended.

Yes. At the moment of slaughter, 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) is obligatory. Deliberately omitting it renders the sacrifice invalid. The full phrase 'Bismillahi wallahu Akbar' is the minimum Sunnah form. All other duas, before and after the slaughter, are strongly recommended but not obligatory.

The Eid al-Adha Takbeer is: 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa Lillahil Hamd', meaning 'Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is for Allah.' It should be recited from Fajr on the 9th Dhul Hijjah until Asr on the 13th.

The Niyyat for Qurbani is: 'Nawaitu an udahhiya lillahi ta'ala', meaning 'I intend to perform the sacrifice for the sake of Allah, the Most High.' The intention can be made silently in the heart or spoken aloud. If performing on behalf of another, the intention should include their name.

The Qurbani dua is recited in stages: the Niyyat before approaching the animal, the full dua from Surah Al-An'am immediately before the slaughter, 'Bismillahi wallahu Akbar' at the exact moment of slaughter, and the dua of acceptance after the sacrifice is complete. Each stage has its own supplication as demonstrated by the Prophet (SAW).

Yes. The majority of UK Muslims give Qurbani through a trusted charity that acts as their Islamic agent to perform the sacrifice on their behalf. Al Mustafa Welfare Trust performs Qurbani in 21+ countries, recites the correct duas including Bismillah at the moment of slaughter, and provides donors with a post-Eid confirmation report.
