Give Someone the Gift of Sight this Ramadan

As Ramadan 2019 draws closer, Muslims around the world are preparing for the privilege of a month filled with infinite blessing and reward. This Holy month serves as a reminder to us – and our brothers and sisters around the world – of both the importance of our faith and the significance of this most auspicious time of the year.

With your generous support, Al Mustafa Welfare Trust continues to provide essential aid and assistance to those in need during Ramadan and throughout the rest of the year. Our eye charity cataract appeal is just one way in which we strive to provide a brighter future for all; after all, what better gift is there than the gift of sight?

The Blessed Month of Ramadan

We are truly blessed to reach this auspicious month once again. As Ramadan 2019 arrives, we humbly ask Allah (SWT) to accept our prayers and donations throughout the coming month. Ameen.

The Holy month of Ramadan teaches us the kind of discipline that we should adopt throughout the year and the particular character that we should be employing in our daily lives.

After all, Ramadan is not just about refraining from eating and drinking between the hours of sunrise and sunset. Some of the notable acts that we must abstain from during Ramadan, such as using bad language, backbiting, harming others, seeing or committing evil deeds, and speaking ill of others – are all sins. Therefore, we should be avoiding them in the first place.

As a result, this blessed month is a clear reminder of how we should aim to act and behave, both now and in the future. Furthermore, Ramadan also serves to remind us of what we have and what we often take for granted.

For example, if a man is accustomed to fine dining in his very own mansion, what use would he have for a stale piece of bread and a tent? But for his brother who is accustomed to starving on the cold streets, it could mean the difference between life and death. This really puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?

“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others…”

-        Jonathan Swift

When you stop to think about it, it is incredible what we take for granted in this day and age. We are lucky enough to live in a society where when we want bread, we just have to visit any shop or supermarket to get some - and there are hundreds of different varieties of it, too! MAny of us are truly blessed to have this available on our doorsteps or just a click of a button away.

Of course, though, it isn’t just nourishment that we are accustomed to, it is also other essential necessities of life, such as our senses – being able to speak, being able to move, having the ability to hear or see the world around us…

Give the Gift of Sight in Ramadan 2019

Did you know that every minute of every day, a child goes blind?

This is a startling statistic, but it is one that we can change – and we will change, together.

Around the world today, it is estimated that 1.3 billion people are living with some form of vision impairment. An estimated 90% of these 1.3 billion people live in developing countries and approximately 80% of this vision impairment is considered to be avoidable, such as cataracts or uncorrected refractive errors. A very large fraction of those who are blind suffer from cataracts, which can often be cured with a very short, simple operation.

However, because so many of those affected by cataracts do not have access to sufficient medical aid, they are often left with no choice but to suffer and accept the darkness.

Al Mustafa Welfare Trust’s Eye Charity Appeal

The team here at Al Mustafa Welfare Trust aim to change that, saving lives and building a brighter future for as many of those suffering from the devastating effects of cataracts as possible.

In communities that are already struggling to cope with extreme poverty, the blind and visually impaired are often considered a burden. Without proper care and support, they can become isolated and dependent on family members, finding it hard to get by.

With your continuous support, we strive to work alongside other organisations to raise awareness for those living with preventable blindness today. In the majority of cases we have seen, complete blindness has been avoidable. Thanks to the assistance of our donors, we have managed to help perform over 88,500 life-changing cataract surgeries to date – a figure which is constantly growing.

In hindsight, don’t you think that giving someone the gift of vision is a remarkable gift to give?
