A father of five daughters and one son, Shahabuddin and his wife made many sacrifices to raise their children and see them marry and settle into their own homes. Shahabuddin could never have imagined that when the time came for him to rely on his children, they would let him down.

‘I have felt alone since my wife died a few years back.’ Says Shahabuddin ‘But as long as I was living with my son’s family, I still felt protected. ’ Aged 80, Shahabuddin has lived in Lahore his whole life. For forty years, he worked at a factory for cosmetics products in the outskirt town of Shahdara. He worked especially hard to give his only son an education, putting him through vocational training and supporting him until he got a job and got married. Eventually after Shahabuddin's wife passed away, he moved in with his son’s family.  'I always tried to please my son’s wife and children, but one day he said to me, "father, I got a job in Sharjah and I have to move with my family from Pakistan." It was a shock. When I asked what would happen to me, my son had no reply. That was my fate in the end after 40 years of raising, feeding and serving my children and grandchildren.’ Shahabuddin now lives at the AMWT care home in Lahore, where he has the company of many other people who share his situation. If it weren’t for our Honour the Elderly sponsorship programme, he’d simply have been homeless. AMWT’s Honour the Elderly programme allows us to tackle loneliness, neglect and social isolation in old age. At our care home in Lahore, we have a total of 24 elderly people, all of whom are above the age of sixty, and destitute. But with donor support, good company and care from our staff, they're living out the autumn of their lives with hope and in relative comfort. There are still hundreds of vulnerable, older adults who need our help. Many are homeless and won’t be able to survive this winter on their own. Please Sponsor an older person today for as little as £14 a month today.
