How we work

We work with local communities and use a mixture of low cost technologies to deliver lasting solutions. Al-Mustafa Welfare Trust's Water and Sanitation Waqf offers communities both the practical and educational means to overcome problems associated with the lack of clean water and sanitation facilities.

Hand Pump - £200

A manual hand pump can provide water to 2-4 families for many years to allow them to drink, cook and clean. In 2010 we installed 55 hand pumps. AMWT is delivering tube wells to the following countries: Pakistan, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Balochistan, India, Bangladesh.

Dug Well - £2500

Traditional dug well is a manual well which is more suitable for rural communities and can fulfill the water needs of whole communities. The cost of digging a well varies country to country but as an example the cost of digging a well in Africa ranges from £3500 - £27,000 depending on size and number of years of water that can be delivered. AMWT is delivering Dug Wells to the following countries: Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Gambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia.

Community Well - £1500

The avarage cost of building a community well are around £1,500 on average. The costs include construction and continuous monitoring. The benefits of building community wells is that whole communities can access clean drinking water which helps minimise the risk of water borne diseases spreading to other people living in close proximity. AMWT is delivering community wells to the following countries: Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Gambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia.

Agricultural Tube Well - £1000

A tube well is a type of water well in which a long 100–200 mm (5 to 8 inch) wide stainless steel tube or pipe is bored into the underground aquifer. The lower end is fitted with a strainer, and a pump at the top lifts water for irrigation. The required depth of the well depends on the depth of the water table. AMWT is delivering tube wells to the following countries: Pakistan, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Balochistan, India, Bangladesh.

Electric Pump - £300

An electric pump can provide water to 10-15 families for many years to allow them to drink, cook and clean. It’s also very cost effective and allows to supply to the houses of the people and especially to venerable peoples like old and disables those who cannot manage to come to water supply point and collect water. AMWT is delivering electric pumps to the following countries: Pakistan, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Balochistan, India, Bangladesh.

Our water scheme has help thousands of people who previously walked for many miles each day to collect water or would otherwise have died through illness have been able to return to living normal lives simply by receiving this most basic requirement. In 2009-2010 we completed 3 water wells in Gambia. In 2011, AMWT has delivered vital water aid to drought stricken areas of East Africa, Pakistan and Nepal (see photo gallery for more details).
