Free Medical & Eye Camps for Flood victims of Pakistan 2010
In September 2010, the United Nations published a report on the flood victims of Pakistan. The report revealed a bleak assessment of the state of health of the flood victims and highlighted the various epidemics that the population was suffering from. These included up to 3.5 million children that were at high risk of deadly water-borne diseases such as watery diarrhoea and dysentery. Recognizing the health crisis revealed by the UN report, Al-Mustafa arranged a number of free medical/eye camps as well as providing clean water provision through water pumps so that people in all flood affected areas had access to clean and safe drinking water. Al-Mustafa organized more than 60 medical camps around flood affected areas. Dr Zahoor ud Din the co-ordinator of Al-Mustafa and Dr Shafique supervised the medical team which consisted of 15 specialist doctors. More then 50,000 thousands patients were treated in these free medical camps. The following table depicts the number of people treated by AMWT in various towns and cities affected by the floods and the free treatment provided:

Table: Number of people treated by AMWT in flood affected areas
Fourty-year-old Ameer Khan’s home was washed way and ended up residing in a free camp with 9 members of his family in Charsada in August 2010. He and his two kids (Ayesah 3 years old and Qasim 5 years old) received free treatment at AMWT’s medical camp in Charsada. He added “My three-year-old daughter Ayesha and Qasim were sick and complaining every day of stomach pain, I wasn’t well either but I didn’t know how I could afford any medical care, as I have no money”, said Ameer Khan. “Then someone told me about the free medical care that Al-Mustafa provides, so I went to the free medical camp with my kids. We got proper medical treatment and we were given everything for free. The staff of Al-Mustafa were very friendly, and the free medical service has helped improve our situation. All family members and other affected people are really getting lot of relief from Al-Mustafa’s work.”
